As Chief Financial Officer, Karl Boston is responsible for the overall direction of financial components for the agency, including fiscal planning, financial accounting and reporting functions, budget development and execution, systems administration, records and inventory control, and highly complex procurement services.  The core of his fiscal responsibility encompasses daily oversight of the agency’s general budget which exceeds $300 million.

Boston joined the Department of Public Safety in June 2012 and assumed his current role as Chief Financial Officer in October 2017. He briefly left SCDPS to work for the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice as Director of Fiscal Affairs in 2016. Before starting his career with SCDPS, Boston spent nearly 29 years working for the South Carolina Department of Mental Health in several managerial roles culminating as Center Administrator for Lexington County Community Mental Health Center.

He graduated from Limestone College, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
